Education & Safety Demonstrations
Promoting Electric Safety to Area Youth
Your cooperative provides electric safety demonstrations for our local elementary schools as well as other youth groups. Hawkeye has two different types of safety demonstrations. REC employees can either come to your school and use a table-top model or the students are welcome to visit the REC facilities and the linemen will demonstrate with a live high-voltage set-up.
Table-Top Display
The table-top display has various experiments that are conducted throughout the demonstration including climbing and cutting trees, safety and kites and toys, metal ladders, TV antennas, overhead machinery and downed power lines. One part of the demonstration uses a hot dog comparing how electric current would pass through the human body if contact were made.
Almost 600 students attended safety demonstrations last year. Hawkeye is committed to the safety and education of our local youth.

Live High-Voltage Demonstration
The live high-voltage demonstration shows the danger of electricity during storms when tree branches fall on power lines. A hot-dog is also used simulating how electric current would pass through the human body if contact were made. Employees will also give a tour of the REC facilities, explain to the students how a power outage is handled and see what type of equipment the linemen have to wear when they are working on power lines.
