Phone Scam Alert
Third party claiming to be local utility company

Recently, a member of Hawkeye REC from Winneshiek County received a phone call from a party claiming to be from their utility company.  The caller claimed that their account was past due and they would be disconnected tomorrow if payment was not made over the phone.  They asked for a checking account number and bank information, claiming it was the only way to avoid disconnection.

Please be advised that before Hawkeye REC disconnects a service, our members receive several notifications, including a mailing, an automated phone call, and a bright yellow plastic bag containing notification of account status posted on their premises.

If any party contacts you asking for a payment, we would advise you to call us directly at 1-800-658-2243 and then call your local authorities to report the scam.

This phone scam has also been taking place throughout Iowa with members of Alliant Energy and Mid-American Energy. We urge you to be careful and be smart.
