2 c. margarine or butter
3 c. powdered sugar
2 eggs
4 t. vanilla
1 t. cream of tartar
1 t. salt
3 c. flour
1 t. soda

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and vanilla. Sift together the rest of the ingredients and add to mixture. Chill until dough stiffens and roll to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out desired shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 7-10 minutes, until just starting to brown at 350 degrees. You can sprinkle with colored sugars or candies before baking or cool cookies and decorate with frosting.
